attribute NC_GLOBAL abstract String The CAGES program (Comparative Assessment of Gulf Estuarine ecoSystems) is designed to examine the differences between estuarine ecosystems and investigate why some are more productive than others. The program focuses on estuarine areas important to commercial fisheries and includes data on commercial finfish and invertebrate species, as well as other species commonly captured in trawl sampling. The Texas dataset is a subset of the CAGES Relational Database which is a compilation of fishery-independent data contributed by natural resource agencies of the Gulf States (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida). It includes data from trawls collected by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), as well as associated hydrographic data. Trawl data were used to calculate CPUE (catch per unit effort) data for 26 target species at each sampling site, measured in number of organisms per hectare. Data presented here show the mean CPUE at each TPWD station for the years 1982 through 2005. Only stations sampled during these time periods are displayed.

attribute NC_GLOBAL Process_Description String Species Count and Measurement Description: Organisms greater than 5 mm total length, captured in trawl or stranded on boat deck, were identified to the lowest possible phylogenetic unit (genus and species preferred). Up to 19 individuals of each species to be measured were randomly selected from each trawl. If less than 19 individuals were caught then all were measured, if more than 19, the remainder were counted. For shrimp, 50 randomly selected shrimp of each commercial species (brown, white and pink) were measured. The sex was determined (1 = male and 2 = female) and female maturity stage (0 ? 9) was also determined for 50 white shrimp. Blue crabs were measured and the sex was determined (1 = male, 2 = female and 0 = unknown or sacculinid infested) for 35 randomly selected blue crabs; and the remainder was counted and the maturity stage (0 ? 4, 8 and 9) was determined for measured females. If species are present that could not be identified, they were placed in a labeled plastic bag on ice and transported to field station. Determinations of length were based on the following: Length measurements for fish followed the following procedures: Total length - tip of snout (mouth closed) to tip of longest caudal fin ray (caudal fin compressed). Standard length (used only if total length cannot be measured) - tip of snout (mouth closed) to base of caudal peduncle. Fork length (used only if total length cannot be measured) ? tip of snout (mouth closed) to center of fork on caudal fin.

attribute NC_GLOBAL purpose String The purpose of CAGES is to compile the fishery independent data from five Gulf States into one searchable database that could be used to more easily compare the fisheries across the US Gulf of Mexico coast. This dataset includes data collected from Texas only. The CAGES database is intended for scientific research only.
attribute NC_GLOBAL Sampling_Gear_Description String Coastal Fisheries trawls are 6.1 m (20 ft) wide otter trawls with 38 mm (1.5 in) stretched nylon multifilament mesh throughout. Trawl doors are 1.2 m (48 in) long and 0.5 m (20 in) wide, and constructed of 13 mm (0.5 in) plywood with angle iron framework and iron runners. Trawls were towed for 10 minutes at 3 mph parallel to fathom curve. The direction of the trawl tows were randomly selected for the first trawl tow and alternate directions were used for subsequent tows. In depths less than 6.1 m 30.5 m of bridle was deployed to a position just aft of stern. In depths greater than 6.1 m (20 ft) a 5:1 cable (length to water-depth ratio) was used (cable length includes bridle length). Trawls were made in water depths ranging from 0.2 ? 62.4 m. Trawls were not conducted in the same grid more than once per month and no trawling was conducted in marked navigational channels.

Use the samplingEffort term for additional effort information that is not addressed by other terms. Contents in this term (either verbatim or by vocabulary) will be used consistently in a dataset. More extensive discussion of sampling protocol, effort and conditions may be provided in metadata as needed.

Like samplingEffort, this term describes phenomena other than the method intended by the data collector in the samplingProtocol. The difference between samplingEffort and samplingConditions is that samplingConditions describes the state of the environment, and samplingEffort describes the actions of the sampler. More than one type of information about conditions can be concatenated into this term, delimited by semicolon. Contents in this term (either verbatim or by vocabulary) will be used consistently in a dataset and will be explained in metadata. attribute waterBody description String The name of the water body in which the observation was made. For marine data, this is the ocean name. If there is a more specific named region, such as a bay or reef, or sector of the ocean (for example, northwest Pacific), add the regional name after the ocean name, separated by a semicolon. Note that the locality term will contain the most specific name, such as a pier or other named feature, so that lowest level of detail need not be included in the waterbody term. The waterbody term is for the ocean and any named intermediate geography such as a region.

attribute locality description String The locality is the most specific named place to identify the location of the observation. Many marine data rely strictly on geographic coordinates, so the locality term may be null. If a locality is used, it may be a specific location or feature name, such as "Pier 39" or "Atafu Atoll", or it may include a descriptive phrase, such as "a tidal pool 1500 meters north of Pier 39". Note that in marine observations, the latitude and longitude may be more precise than any named place would suggest, because the coordinates often come from navigation of GPS systems. Geographic names can be secondary locality identifiers and they can be less precise than coordinates.
